First Mate

Oregon Women's Sailing Association Programs First Mate

The First Mate Program was created to identify OWSA members of intermediate and advanced sailing skills who are interested in participating  in a minimum of one Wednesday Night Sail per month.

As a First Mate, she will assist the skipper actively with her sailing skills, as well as helping maintain the safety of the event by providing a second set of eyes for the skipper; both outside the boat looking for traffic or obstructions as well as inside the boat assuring that newer sailors are maintaining safe practices.

Please review the First Mate Checklist to see which skills First Mates are expected to possess and demonstrate.

Our First Mate Checklist is used by First Mate Chair and her team during First Mate Checkout sessions.  It will result in the candidate knowing which skills they have demonstrated and which they need training, practice, and/or confidence.

Contact FirstMate@owsa.net for details on becoming an OWSA First Mate.

I am a sailor,
you're my first mate;
We signed on together,
we coupled our fate;
Hauled up our anchor,
determined not to fail;
For the heart's treasure,
together we set sail."
