Boat Owner Advanced Training
The OWSA BOAT program provides an opportunity for women sailors to experience the challenges of boat ownership through use of one of OWSA’s sailboats for a year. Two boats (Ranger 20 and Martin 242) are dedicated to advancing racing skills and two boats (Ranger 20 and Cal 20) are used primarily to provide day sailing and cruising experiences.
Eligibility for boat use is based on skill level, volunteer service, and membership in OWSA for at least a year. Participants bring the boats out for all OWSA events. This allows member to experience the challenges of boat rigging, maneuvering, racing, and cruising on the Columbia River.
BOAT “owners” maintain their vessels with the help of experienced local sailor volunteers who provide education about outboard use and maintenance, sailboat rigging, sail care and use, and a host of other subjects involved in the care and use of a sailing vessel.
The BOAT program is supported by the community with donations of vessels and money. Additionally each member participating in the program contributes a monthly fee which funds the maintenance of the boats and new sails and equipment as needed.
