I remember crossing paths with Tethys in Papeete in 1995. It was quite unusual to see all women crew at that time. She handles her vessel with grace and expertise.

Nice article and good points throughout. I help many people buy boats and it is a very emotional experience. What I do is take the non emotional part of the process and do the negotiation and money transactions for the buyer and seller. I actually had a guy back out of a boat because he did not like the seller. So now I do not let the two meet. That way the buyer feels that the boat is already theirs and no one gets bad feelings by what the other says. The one important point you make is find the boat you want then go looking for the best one or best value out there. Good work.

Great article Debra!

I have now purchased three boats (Capri 22, Cal 2-25 and Morgan 41) and, while that "can't sleep" excitement is always part of the process, your story really brought back the special thrill I felt when I got my very first boat. On each occasion the hardest part for me was having to put that aside the "love factor" and negotiate to the right price, always remembering that "boats grow on trees" as one sailor friend told me. It is possible you will not reach a price you & the seller can agree on and you always have to be willing to walk away and start over if the deal can't be done. It came down to $500 on my Morgan (a $100,000+ boat)! Also, that survey is the most important part of the whole process as it will eliminate all sorts of future surprises.

I learned to sail on a Newport 33 so Newports hold a special place in my heart. I'm sure you will love your 30 and sail her bottom paint off. Enjoy!

Many thanks to Sherry for the motivation to fly the OWSA burgee wherever we roam. Oregon sailors are everywhere and need to know about OWSA. BTW, Sherry, I'm almost a neighbor. Aurora has just gotten permanent moorage at Port Townsend's Boat Haven. Maybe I'll see you at the Wooden Boat Festival? BTW please if you know the crews of First Light and Reality, please give them our regards, I much appreciated their encouraging words in Port Hardy and it was great to pass them as they headed into lovely Bacchante Cove in Clayoquot Sound.

Thanks for the kind words, Sandra. I get as much pleasure out of taking OWSA members and other guests out, as they do.
